Las Alpujarras

We have chosen Las Alpujarras because of its stunning location on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It is an area of steep terraced valleys, extensively irrigated by acequia systems built by the Moors who made this their home between the 11th and 16th centuries.

The holiday includes five days walking with a mixture of shorter and longer walks. We will be following ancient paths, the only routes before the roads were built, through terraced fields, oak and chestnut woods, and into the white washed villages of typical Alpujarran construction. The houses are low with flat roofs, huddled together on steep streets, often too narrow for cars. There maybe at least one trek up the valley towards the mountain peaks. This trek is about 19km long and goes up to a height of just over 2000 meters. It takes about 8 hours and is dependant on the weather conditions . Because of the nature of the terrain , all walks, including the shorter ones, will involve some steep sections, therefore good walking boots will be essential and sticks would be helpful .

Don´t worry, we will not be rushing as we believe that walking should be a pleasure and we are here to enjoy ourselves! All walks are on way-marked paths and are possible for any regular walker. Our accommodation is in a small family run hotel or apartments in the village of Capileira. At 1,486 meters it is the highest of three villages in the spectacular Poqueira Gorge.

Malaga is the nearest airport at about three hours from Capileira. We can advise on booking flights and organise transport to and from the airport if required. Please ask for information.

The holiday is offered at £305 per person, based on two people sharing a twin room, excluding flights. All guided walks are included, as is bed and breakfast, five evening meals, plus packed lunches on four of the walk days. One of our walks involves a visit to a neighbouring village where we will have lunch at a local bar. For our evening meals we will use a selection of the local restaurants as there are numerous to choose from offering a variety of different menus. This means that we can offer a choice for vegetarians. In the middle of the week there will be a free day when you can do your own exploring. Maybe enjoy a massage, go horse riding, take a trip to Granada or just relax back at the hotel.
